A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
