Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
