EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
