The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
