The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
